The Volksgasmaske (in full Luftschutz Volksgasmaske) was a simple gas mask that was issued to the German civilian population during World War II. The mask was intended to protect civilians from potential Allied chemical attacks. Both the Allies and the Axis powers had large quantities of chemical weapons at their disposal, and the fear of gas attacks on cities was widespread, partly due to experiences from World War I. The Volksmaske 40 replaced the VM 37 as materials became more scarce during the war.

Unused condition, this model came in two variants "M' for men and "F" for women which is embossed in the lid and the interior. Nicely WaA marked both filer and mask. What makes this mask touching is that someone has written the word "Mutter" (mother) in pencil on the lid.
