Established by Adolf Hitler on September 20, 1943. The shield was awarded to Wehrmacht personnel (army, air force, and navy) who fought in the Kuban bridgehead, a strategic area in the Caucasus region of the Soviet Union, between February and October 1943. Criteria: To be eligible, service members had to meet specific criteria, including: Serving in the bridgehead for at least 60 days. Being wounded during the fighting in the bridgehead. Participating in one of the major defensive battles.
