Lot Gebirgsjäger Nordfront - Eismeerfront
Category:
The German Gebirgsjäger (mountain troops) played a significant role in Northern Finland and Norway during World War II, as part of the German 20th Mountain Army (formerly Army Lapland). Their main units were the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 7th Mountain Divisions, as well as the 6th SS Mountain Division "Nord." They were involved in fighting on the Eastern Front in the Arctic regions, particularly in the Petsamo region and along the Litsa River, where the front line was stabilized in 1941. The strategic importance of this area lay in the nickel mines and the Soviet port of Murmansk. Initially, the German troops fought alongside the Finnish forces in the Continuation War (1941–1944) against the Soviet Union. When Finland signed a separate peace treaty with the Soviets in September 1944, the German troops were forced to leave Finland, leading to the Lapland War.
