The Brodie helmet and the doughboy helmet are essentially the same design of military helmet, with "doughboy helmet" being the colloquial American term for the British-designed "Brodie" helmet. Brodie helmet: This is the official name for the steel combat helmet designed and patented by John Leopold Brodie in London in 1915. The original 1915 design ("Brodie's Steel Helmet, War Office Pattern") was quickly superseded by the refined Mk I in Britain (and later the Mk II for WWII, which looked similar but used better steel and a new liner). Doughboy helmet: This was the common, informal name used in the United States for the version adopted by American forces in World War I, officially designated the M1917 Helmet. "Doughboy" was the nickname for American infantry soldiers during WWI. The helmets shared the following characteristics: A distinctive shallow, circular, "soup bowl" shape with a wide brim, inspired by medieval "kettle hats". Designed primarily to protect the head and shoulders from overhead shrapnel and shell fragments, a major threat in trench warfare. Made of manganese steel, chosen for its strength and ease of mass production via a single pressing process. The design allowed for quick and cheap production compared to more complex designs like the German Stahlhelm. While both terms refer to the same basic design, minor differences existed between the actual British Mk I/Mk II helmets and the American M1917, such as the specific type of rivets used for the chinstrap bails and the liner patterns.

This item:
A very hard to find in this condition an untouched US made M1917 helmet. It is in the “sand” finish as worn in the trenches, it retains all of it's original paint . Comes with it's original inner which is in a supple condition, the net is completely intact!, The brown leather chinstrap is complete and supple, the leather attachment loop is torn but still present and complete. Helmet is maker marked "ZF41". ZF was a manufacture code, and the 41 was for a lot/batch number. Great U.S WWI combat helmet.
