A German dog tag pouch (German: Erkennungsmarken Tasche) is a small leather or cloth pouch used by soldiers, particularly in the Wehrmacht during WWI and WWII, to carry their identification tag (Erkennungsmarke). It was typically a private purchase item sold in regimental stores, not standard issue, but became popular for several practical reasons.
Purpose and Features. The primary reason for its use was to prevent the metal identification disc from resting directly against the soldier's skin, which could be extremely cold, especially during winter. The pouch protected the tag from rubbing on the skin or uniform, and prevented the metal from shining, which could attract the attention of enemy snipers.
It held the oval-shaped, breakable dog tag securely, often worn on a cord around the neck. Some veterans mentioned using the pouch to carry small personal items a picture or coins, like 5 Reichsmark coins, for good luck or other personal reasons
This item:
A nice and uncleaned salty leather erkennungsmarke pouch. I picked this one up on a flea market. A very clever design with 3 compartments which could hold some cash or a picture from a loved one. The closure strap is torn. It comes with it's original cord. Please note the typical push buttons as used for the felt cover of the field canteen.
