The Eckernförde Torpedo Testing Facility (TVA) was a central facility of the German Navy for testing and developing torpedoes. It no longer exists in this form. Testing took place in the bay off Eckernförde, as the water depth and the secluded location offered particularly favorable conditions.
Beginnings in Eckernförde: The beginning of the testing program in Eckernförde dates back to the Imperial era. As early as 1913, a torpedo firing range was established in Eckernförde Bay on behalf of the Imperial Torpedo Workshop in Friedrichsort. During World War II, the TVA became an important location for German naval research. It had several departments and branch offices, including those in Surendorf (as TVA Eckernförde-East) and Neubrandenburg. Dismantling and subsequent use: After the war, the TVA site was dismantled by the Allies. The weapons and ammunition used in the torpedo tests continue to pose a threat to the marine environment. The former site is now home to the German Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement for Ships and Naval Weapons, Maritime Technology and Research (WTD 71).
