The Iron Cross First Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse, or EKI) WW1 was a prestigious Prussian military decoration awarded for repeated acts of exceptional bravery in combat or outstanding leadership. It was reinstituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II on August 5, 1914, for the duration of World War I. The medal is a cross pattée with a black iron core and a silver frame. The obverse (front) features a "W" (for Kaiser Wilhelm II) in the center, an imperial crown on the top arm, and the year "1914" on the bottom arm. Unlike the Iron Cross Second Class, which was worn from a ribbon, the First Class medal was a pin-back award worn pinned directly onto the left breast pocket of the uniform tunic. To be eligible for the Iron Cross First Class, a soldier generally had to have already received the Iron Cross Second Class. It was awarded for further, significant acts of courage or merit after the initial award.
