The War Merit Cross 1st Class without Swords was a German decoration awarded during World War II. It was instituted by Adolf Hitler on October 18, 1939, to honor individuals—both military personnel and civilians—for exceptional service to the war effort that was not directly related to combat at the front. The decoration recognized achievements that did not qualify for the Iron Cross but nevertheless made a significant contribution to the war effort. Without Swords: This specific variant was awarded for civilian service, such as in industry, administration, science, humanitarian aid, or organizing logistical support for the army. The version with swords was for bravery and service rendered in a military context, but not directly in frontline combat. Class: The 1st Class was a higher decoration than the 2nd Class and was usually pinned to the uniform (unlike the 2nd Class, which was worn on a ribbon).
The cross was in the shape of a Maltese cross with a swastika in the center and an oak leaf wreath, but without the crossed swords present on the military version. Recipients came from various fields, including factory directors, scientists, civil servants, and others who supported the front through their work behind the lines.
