The German military fur hat from World War II is commonly called the "Pelzmütze." This hat was introduced in 1942 after the harsh winter on the Eastern Front of 1941-1942, when German troops faced extremely cold temperatures that their standard uniforms were inadequate for. The Pelzmütze was specifically designed to provide better protection against the cold. The design was similar to the Russian ushanka, with a peaked front and foldable side and back panels that could cover the wearer's ears and neck. They were typically made with a field-gray wool outer and lined with real rabbit fur (or sheepskin/faux fur, depending on the variation) for insulation. The ear flaps could be fastened with a button or tied under the chin for maximum warmth. A national emblem (eagle and swastika) or a cockade was often worn on the front, although there were many variations, and some hats lacked insignia. The Pelzmütze was standard equipment for enlisted men and non-commissioned officers during the winter season (from 15 September to 15 April) in colder operational areas.
