The Deutsches Reichssportabzeichen in Silber (German National Sports Badge in Silver) was a civil and military award in Nazi Germany, given for exceptional physical fitness and athletic achievements. It was intended to promote physical training and military readiness among the population, which aligned with the ideology of the regime. The badge was awarded by the Deutscher Reichsbund für Leibesübungen (DRL), the umbrella sports organization of the Third Reich.
Status: Although it was a civil award, it was often worn by military personnel on their uniforms. It was available in three grades: bronze, silver, and gold, with silver representing a higher level of achievement or long-term consistency. The exact requirements for the silver badge were age-based and included successfully completing five components of a national fitness test within a period of twelve months. For persons aged 18 to 32: One had to achieve the required performances over a total of eight consecutive or interrupted years. For persons aged 32 to 40: One could earn the silver badge by completing the tests within a period of twelve months. The tests included various disciplines such as gymnastics, defensive sports, and general physical exercises, which were assessed for skill, endurance, and time. There was also a separate, political version called the SA-Sportabzeichen (SA Sports Badge), which was also available in silver and specifically aimed at members of the Sturmabteilung (SA) and later all German citizens.
