The books often started with the "duties of German soldiers" and the soldier's oath to Adolf Hitler. They included a "Prayer for Führer, Nation, and Armed Forces" (Gebet für Führer, Volk und Wehrmacht). Some traditional hymns had lyrics altered to include references such as "Loyalty to Führer, People, and Reich!".
