Der Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten (German for "The Steel Helmet, League of Front-Line Soldiers"), commonly known as Der Stahlhelm, was a German First World War veteran's organization that existed from 1918 to 1935. It was founded on Christmas Day, 1918, in Magdeburg by Franz Seldte, a disabled reserve officer and industrialist. Its initial goal was to preserve the camaraderie of German frontline soldiers and represent their rights and interests in post-war Germany.
Ideology: Despite initially claiming to be apolitical, the group quickly developed into a highly politicized, ultranationalist, and conservative force. Members were generally dissatisfied with the Weimar Republic and the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, and the organization aimed to restore German national pride and an authoritarian state.
Activities: The Stahlhelm functioned as part of the "Black Reichswehr" and served as the paramilitary wing of the monarchist German National People's Party (DNVP) during the late Weimar period. Members participated in political activities, demonstrations, and sometimes violent confrontations with political opponents.
Demise: After the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, the Stahlhelm was disbanded and absorbed into the Sturmabteilung (SA) and other Nazi-related organizations in 1935, as the Nazis consolidated power and eliminated rival groups.
