A Kanalhose (Channel Trousers) is a type of specialist flying trousers used by the German Luftwaffe during World War II. They were part of a two-piece protective flying suit (the "Kanalanzug" or "Channel Uniform") introduced around 1941 for fighter pilots to increase mobility in cramped cockpits.
Key Details
Purpose: Designed for aircrews, particularly fighter pilots, the trousers were intended to be practical and easy to remove during emergency situations over water, such as the English Channel.
Design: They were typically high-waisted and featured many functional elements, including multiple pockets for survival gear, maps, and a signal pistol, as well as numerous zippers (often from brands like "Zipp", "Ri-Ri", and "Rapid") and press-studs.
Materials: The trousers were produced in various materials depending on the climate and time of war, including: Winter versions: Made of blue-grey cotton or leather and fully lined with fur or sheepskin for warmth. Some winter models were also electrically heated, with elements that connected directly to the aircraft's power supply.
Summer/Tropical versions: Made from lightweight, water-repellent tan or blue-grey cotton fabric.
Accessories: They were worn with special matching suspenders and had long zippers on the legs, allowing them to be easily worn over flying boots.
The Kanalhose was a complex and expensive item to produce, but highly regarded for its innovative design and practicality.

These beautiful Luftwaffe "kanalhose" trousers have hardly been used. The front pockets were expertly removed during World War II, a common occurrence since they were also used by tank crews later in the war. Otherwise, the trousers are in mint condition. They are lined with sheepskin, and all zippers (Zipp) are fully functional. All buttons are present and the snaps are functional. Neatly marked with the RbNr. marked, a very fresh and beautiful set.
