The Iron Cross Second Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse or EKII) was a prestigious German military decoration reinstituted by Adolf Hitler on September 1, 1939, for the duration of World War II. The EKII was awarded to personnel who performed a single act of bravery in combat or actions that were significantly beyond the call of duty. It was the lowest class in a hierarchical series of awards, and receiving it was a prerequisite for being considered for higher classes, such as the Iron Cross First Class.
