A German Krim Shield (Krimschild) was a World War II campaign decoration awarded to military personnel who fought in the Crimean Peninsula between September 21, 1941, and July 4, 1942. It commemorated the German conquest of Crimea, specifically the 11th Army's victory at Sevastopol under Field Marshal Erich von Manstein. Officially instituted on July 25, 1942, by Adolf Hitler. To qualify, a soldier must have served in the region for at least 90 days, participated in at least one major combat operation, or been wounded during the campaign. It was the most widely issued German campaign shield, with approximately 250,000 to 300,000 awarded to members of the Army (Heer), Air Force (Luftwaffe), and Navy (Kriegsmarine). Appearance: The shield features a German eagle clutching a swastika at the top, flanked by the dates "1941" and "1942". Below this is a map of the Crimean Peninsula with the word "KRIM" stamped across it. Most were made of stamped sheet metal (steel or zinc) with a bronze finish. It was worn on the upper left sleeve of the uniform. The metal shield was mounted on a cloth backing that matched the color of the recipient's uniform (e.g., field-grey for the Army, Black for panzer units, blue-grey for the Luftwaffe).
