The War Merit Cross (Kriegsverdienstkreuz) was a military decoration of Nazi Germany during World War II, instituted by Adolf Hitler on October 18, 1939. It was awarded to both military personnel and civilians, men and women, for meritorious contributions to the war effort that did not take place under direct enemy fire and therefore did not qualify for the Iron Cross. Classes and types The cross was awarded in several classes and in two variants: With Swords (mit Schwertern): For military merit or bravery that was not directly combat-related (for example, logistics, planning, or exceptional courage behind the front lines). Without Swords (ohne Schwertern): For merits on the home front, such as in the war industry, administration, or other civilian services. The classes were similar to those of the Iron Cross and included: War Merit Medal: A separate medal, the lowest grade, mainly for civilian workers who demonstrated exceptional service, often by exceeding work quotas. War Merit Cross 2nd Class: The basic grade of the cross. War Merit Cross 1st Class: A higher grade, usually awarded to individuals who had already received the 2nd Class. Knight's Cross of the War Merit Cross: An even higher distinction for exceptional achievement or leadership.
