The first French edition of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf, titled "Mon Combat," was published in February 1934 by Nouvelles Éditions Latines (publisher Fernand Sorlot) in Paris. This edition was controversial because it was published without the permission of Hitler or his German publisher.
Edition Details. The 1934 edition was the first complete translation into French, carried out by André Calmettes and Maurice Gaudefroy-Demombynes. Title: Mon Combat. Publisher: Nouvelles Éditions Latines (Fernand Sorlot), Paris. Publication Date: February 1934. Format: Paperback, 688 pages. Controversies and Legal Action: The publication was a unilateral action, primarily motivated by right-wing French nationalists who wanted to warn their fellow countrymen of the German threat. It was an Illegal publication, the edition was not authorized by Hitler's official German publisher, Franz Eher Nachfolger. Hitler and his publisher sued Fernand Sorlot for copyright infringement. The lawsuit was successful, primarily because the publication exposed Hitler's plans for the conquest of France, which he wanted to conceal internationally at the time. The edition was banned by a Paris court two months after publication and ordered to be withdrawn from sale. Despite this, it continued to circulate on the black market. A later, authorized, and heavily censored French translation, titled Ma Doctrine (My Doctrine), was published in 1938 by Librairie Arthème Fayard.
