A Feldgendarmerie gorget (German: Ringkragen) is a kidney-shaped metal breastplate worn by the German military police during World War II. It served as an official symbol of authority and indicated that the wearer was on active duty. Because of the distinctive metal chain from which the shield hung, the military police officers were nicknamed "Kettenhunde" (chained dogs). The shield is usually made of stamped steel or aluminum with a silver coating. It features a Wehrmacht eagle in the center, two studs in the upper corners, and a text band at the bottom with the word "Feldgendarmerie." A unique feature is that the eagle, studs, and text band are often treated with a luminous (phosphorescent) yellow paint. This made the officers visible to troops and vehicles even in the dark. The gorget was worn around the neck with a heavy metal chain. Hooks were attached to the back; One to secure the chain and one to thread through a buttonhole in the uniform to prevent the shield from swinging back and forth. The back was often covered with gray or green felt, cloth, or cardboard to prevent damage to the uniform.

This gorget is in near-mint condition. The chain is at its full length, and both the chain and shield are magnetic. The back still has a beautiful layer of felt in field grey. The chain clearly shows its use, and the shield is truly beautiful. Even after all these years, it still glows beautifully in the dark!
