Although during the First World War there was no official "combat clasp" such as the well-known Close Combat Clasp Second World War, several Unofficial and semi-official clasps issued by veterans' associations for commemorative medals. The most important decorations and corresponding clasps for German veterans of the First World War are: Unofficial Battle Clasps (Gefechtsspangen). Veteran groups such as the Kyffhäuserbund offered clasps that were awarded on medals such as the Kyffhäuser Medal or the Flanders Cross could be worn. These indicated specific battles, such as: Somme, Dilute, Flandern, and Marne. East Africa or Südwestafrika (for colonial troops). Gefechtsspange for specific units, such as the "Marinekorps Flandern".
