The concept of an "Honour Cross" for relatives is the most specific in the military history of Germany, but similar awards also exist in the United Kingdom and Canada.
Germany: The Hindenburg Cross (1914-1918) The most famous "Honour Cross for Next of Kin" is the German Ehrenkreuz des Weltkrieges 1914/1918, often the Hindenburg Cross . Established in 1934 by Reich President Paul von Hindenburg to commemorate the service of the German people during World War I.
Next of kin version: This version was specifically for widows and parents of fallen soldiers. Unlike the bronze versions for veterans, the cross for bereaved was made of blackened iron (without swords). The ribbon was colored black, white, and red, but in a reverse order compared to the veteran version (white borders instead of black).
