Wearing a miniature Iron Cross on a buttonhole ribbon is a specific way to display military decorations on an everyday uniform or civilian clothing. This custom differs per class and per war (WWI vs. WWII). Adding a miniature to the ribbon often served to indicate that the wearer possessed a higher class of the decoration than just the 2nd Class. Normally, only the ribbon was worn through the second buttonhole. A miniature cross on this ribbon was often an unofficial addition to emphasize the award.

This is truly a beautiful version that you rarely, if ever, come across. Unlike the simple buttonhole versions, this one is very luxuriously finished with the original 16mm miniature of the Iron cross 2nd class, the original ribbon stretched on cardboard and then finished with field-grey wool fabric on the back; a special button is attached with a flat and soft backing to prevent damage to clothing. The cross has amazing details. This would be a wonderful addition to any Iron Cross collection.
