The War Merit Cross (Kriegsverdienstkreuz, or KVK) was instituted on October 18, 1939. It was designed to recognize acts of merit by military personnel and civilians that did not involve direct combat but were essential to the war effort. The 'with Swords' variant was specifically awarded for services performed under enemy fire or for significant contributions to military planning and logistics.
This item:
KVK 2nd Class with Swords - Maker 14 (L. Christian Lauer) - Mint Condition. A superb, unissued example of the Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern (War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords). This piece was sourced from an old US-based collection and remains in "Mint" condition. The ring is clearly stamped with the number "14", indicating it was manufactured by the prestigious firm L. Christian Lauer of Nuremberg. Unissued/Mint state. The bronze finish has developed a beautiful, deep natural patina over the last 80 years, giving it a very high-end appearance. Comes with its original, full-length, unissued ribbon. The swords and the date "1939" on the reverse are very crisp and sharp, as expected from a Lauer-produced award. A perfect example for the discerning collector who values condition and a clear maker mark.
