This is an authentic, original pair of World War II German military protective goggles (Schutzbrille), widely issued to combat troops, dispatch riders (Kradmelder), and armored vehicle crews. The goggles feature light brown tinted glass lenses securely housed in aluminum rings. A unique feature of this specific model is the design of the frames, which can be opened from the outside using two half-round hinges to allow for lens replacement or maintenance. The frames are expertly mounted into a classic gray leather face mask designed for comfort and field protection. For ventilation and to prevent fogging, the sides are equipped with two distinct ventilated eyelet buttons on each flank. The piece comes complete with its original, adjustable gray elastic headband, maintaining its tension and functionality.
This item:
Lenses & Metalwork: The light brown tinted glass lenses are entirely free of cracks or deep fractures. The aluminum retention rings and their specialized half-round hinges are fully functional and show a clean, uncleaned patina. Leather & Hardware: The original gray leather mask remains remarkably soft and supple, showing honest field wear but completely free of tears, structural damage, or dry rot. All four ventilation eyelet buttons are securely in place and unobstructed. Elastic Band: The adjustable gray elastic strap is fully intact, retains good elasticity for its age, and the adjustment hardware functions smoothly. Markings: The interior leather side features an original, period-correct red ink acceptance/manufacturer stamp. While faded from active wartime use, the letter "M" (likely indicating a maker code such as Merz-Werke, Frankfurt/M.) is still partially visible. Overall State: A beautiful, well-worn, and completely undamaged field-used survivor. It displays excellent historical character and patina without any structural compromises.
