High-Quality 1930s Period Sy & Wagner Pour le Mérite "Blue Max" - Silver Gilt. An exceptional, historically important, and highly authentic 1930s period private purchase replacement copy (Zweitstück) of the legendary Prussian Pour le Mérite ("Blue Max") neck order. Manufactured by the elite Imperial court jeweler Sy & Wagner from Berlin (S&W), these high-quality silver-gilt pieces were custom-ordered during the interbellum era by highly decorated World War I veterans. Veterans wore these robust, official-contract replacements on their active dress uniforms during galas and political rallies to preserve their fragile, solid-gold or official wartime award decorations in safekeeping. This specific cross features textbook silver-gilt construction, authentic manufacturer hallmarks, and is complete with an incredibly scarce, original factory-patented and tailor-modified elasticated neck ribbon assembly characteristic of the 1930s.

Market Positioning & Collector’s Context
The international market for the Pour le Mérite is distinctly divided into two main categories, which directly explains the highly attractive and realistic pricing of this piece: The Premium Award Market: Advanced collectors focus exclusively on 100% officially awarded 1914–1918 specimens. These regular museum-grade awards command prices well into the tens of thousands of Euros, pricing out many advanced hobbyists. The Modern Reproduction Market: Budget-focused buyers look for inexpensive modern copies, though they often hesitate when encountering historical interbellum markings due to the fear of modern Eastern European or Asian counterfeits. This specific cross bridges the gap perfectly: it is an authentic, period-original private purchase manufactured by the original state-contracted Imperial maker during the 1930s. The historical context behind these 1930s "Zweitstücke" is profound. Many WWI officers lost their original decorations in P.O.W. camps, or were forced to pawn and sell their solid-gold official awards to survive the devastating German economic hyperinflation crisis of the 1920s. Furthermore, the Weimar Republic's constitution heavily restricted the public display of imperial military orders. This environment changed dramatically in 1933. When the National Socialist regime assumed power, they fully revitalized the cult of the WWI frontline veteran. Suddenly, old heroes were permitted—and highly encouraged—to wear their historic decorations on their active tunics once again. To replace their long-lost or sold original medals, veterans turned to the original makers like Sy & Wagner for premium, highly detailed private-purchase replacements. The undeniable technical details of this piece—such as the intricate, custom-tailored interbellum elasticated neck ribbon with original aluminum buckles, the successful non-synthetic burn test, and the fact that the textile does not fluoresce under UV light—conclusively verify its authentic 1930s chemical and structural age.

This Item
The Pour le Mérite decoration is in honest, heavily uniform-worn condition, displaying magnificent historical character and a beautiful uncleaned patina.
The Cross: The piece measures exactly 53 mm from point to point and weighs 39 grams (including the ribbon and fixtures). The Maltese cross arms feature their original blue enamel finish, displaying typical period chips, edge wear, and superficial cracks from active usage. The gold-lettered inscription "Pour le Mérite" shows partial, honest age-wear and fading. The integrated eagles between the arms retain nice, crisp factory details. The suspension loop is deeply and cleanly stamped with the desirable official manufacturer's hallmark and silver purity proof: "S & W 938" (Sy & Wagner, .938 Prussian silver gilt). The Ribbon: An extraordinary, 100% period survivor that serves as a prime indicator of its interbellum age. The black and silver-white neck ribbon measures a correct 5.5 cm in width. It features a specialized, luxury period officers' modification: two integrated 10 cm elasticated sections sewn into a dark-green non-elastic band, complete with two aluminum adjusting buckles to ensure a tight, flush fit against a tunic collar. The material is entirely non-fluorescent under UV light and passes the burn test flawlessly, confirming its authentic natural-fiber (silk/cotton) composition.
