This Item
An exceptional, highly advanced, and structurally sound original World War II German military/civilian Bakelite pocket flashlight (Taschenlampe / Feldtaschenleuchte), officially produced by the renowned firm Zeiler. Designated as the highly sought-after Modell M. 4848, this variant is highly coveted for its complex mechanical build and built-in tactical colored lenses used by frontline personnel for night map-reading and covert signaling. The Bakelite Housing & Unique Mechanics: The dark brown Bakelite body is in beautiful, structurally sound condition, entirely free of the typical cracks, heavy chips, or structural hairline fractures common to this fragile material. Unlike standard metal cased torches that open horizontally, this premium model opens vertically via an integrated aluminum piano hinge. The closure is secured by twin, fully functional aluminum spring-loaded push buttons that lock the housing together with a tight factory snap. The Dual Filter Operation: Flanking the front lens cover are two specialized Bakelite rotary knobs finished in distinctive red and black. These knobs actuate the internal mechanical red and green colored signaling filters. Both filters glide into position flawlessly. Reflecting honest wartime field deployment, the green filter knob shows minor wear with a few small serrated edge teeth period-chipped away, without affecting the smooth rotation. The Markings & Exterior Hardware: The face of the upper body features a crisp, deeply embossed classic ZEILER corporate logo situated directly above the official patent designation: No M 4848. The top incorporates the factory sliding on/off toggle and primary aluminum rotary switch. The reverse is fitted with its original, supple brown leather suspension strap designed for secure attachment to the combat field belt or uniform buttons, housed in dual aluminum retention brackets. The Interior & Optics: The internal compartment remains in a pristine, functional state. The silvered parabolic reflector bowl and front glass lens are entirely clear and free of damage. The original electrical contact bars are clean, and the period lightbulb remains securely screwed into the socket, making this a premier display item for advanced personal gear collectors.
