"An exceptional, documented example of an early-production War Order of the German Cross in Gold (Deutsches Kreuz in Gold).
Weighing exactly 67 grams, this heavy variant corresponds with the initial manufacturing specifications executed by the premier contract maker Deschler & Sohn, München. The reverse features the scarce and highly sought-after 10-rivet configuration, utilized exclusively during the earliest production phase in 1941 before transitioning to simplified models.
The alignment consists of eight dome-headed solid rivets positioned symmetrically at the tips of the outer starburst points, paired with two internal rivets aligned vertically along the central axis directly beneath the pin assembly. The hardware is comprised of a robust, period-soldered sheet-metal hinge and a broad, flat-tapered pin. The pin is deeply struck with the authentic PKZ factory identification number '1' for Deschler.
The multi-part construction showcases a centrally placed, raised black enamel mobile swastika set against a silvered disk, bordered by the characteristic dual red enamel rings. The laurel leaf wreath retains substantial portions of its original gilding and displays the distinct, sharp die-striking of the early Deschler master tools, complete with the '1941' institution date at the base.
This piece presents as an untouched, combat-worn veteran specimen. The reverse silver wash has partially migrated, allowing the underlying Tombak alloy base to naturally emerge at the high points and along the edges of the starburst. The obverse swastika exhibits authentic period combat damage to the fragile black enamel, featuring a contemporary, stable field repair using black lacquer—a documented practice among frontline recipients. An elite, investment-grade example of the rarest physical variant of the German Cross in Gold, offering maximum historical integrity.
