This piece represents a very scarce, undocumented private-purchase variant favored by veteran hussars and Freikorps volunteers (such as the Eiserne Division and later Der Stahlhelm veterans) during the border skirmishes of 1918-1920 and well into the Weimar Republic era. This classic "wide grin" icon is historically famous for being hand-painted onto the fronts of early M16/M17/M18 combat helmets by elite German shock troops and post-WWI paramilitary units.The badge features a textbook hollow-stamped brass construction (hohlgeprägt), struck from a relatively thin sheet of geel koper/brass. The reverse displays a flawless, crisp mirror-negative image of the front's features, demonstrating a high-pressure die-struck production rather than a crude modern casting. This specific pattern is instantly recognizable by its highly distinct, stylized "wide grin" or exaggerated toothy grimace, a fierce contemporary design variation crafted by a localized private jeweler or insignia die-maker.The reverse features outstanding textbook manufacturing traits, including four original, flat brass attachment prongs (pins) professionally factory-soldered directly onto the reverse of the crossbones with period solder flow marks.
