In March 1943, during the Third Battle of Kharkov, his lower left arm was completely blown off by shrapnel, while his right arm remained partially paralyzed. Refusing to leave the war, he was fitted with a heavy mechanical prosthesis and took absolute command of the SS-Panzeraufklärungs-Abteilung 16.

Operating fiercely in the Slovenian border regions and the Operational Zone of the Adriatic Littoral in 1944, Reder orchestrated a psychopathic reign of terror under the guise of "anti-partisan operations." Hated by the world, he died ingloriously and without honor in a Vienna hospital on May 2, 1991.
