The stunning, vibrant lithography on the board showcases the gritty reality of 19th-century siege warfare, focusing heavily on heavy artillery, fortresses, and massed infantry, while completely omitting cavalry. Unlike later mass-produced board games, this early edition features a beautifully preserved layout where the colors remain incredibly fresh. The original cardboard box shows honest, age-related wear along the edges, but it has done its job perfectly by protecting the precious contents inside for over 140 years.What makes this specific set an absolute collector's dream is that it remains 100% complete, featuring a total of 51 hand-turned antique wooden pawns. In this tactical battle, one player takes command of just 3 dark-stained wooden pawns representing the high-ranking Officers defending the fortress from within. The other player commands a massive, overwhelming army of white wooden pawns attempting to storm the gates from the outside. While a standard game requires 24 attackers, this luxurious antique set generously includes a whopping 48 white pawns, allowing for extended rules, backup reserves, or double-army variants. The Officers win by jumping over and capturing the attackers like in checkers, while the White infantry wins by completely swarming and occupying the 9 strategic grid points inside the fort.
