The Volksempfänger (German for 'people's receiver') was a series of inexpensive radios that were produced and sold in Nazi Germany. The primary purpose of these radios was to spread the National Socialist propaganda of the Nazi government to as many German households as possible.
Purpose and History. On the initiative of Joseph Goebbels, the Reich Minister of Propaganda, the Volksempfänger was developed by engineer Otto Griessing. Goebbels saw the radio as a crucial tool to spread the Nazi Party's ideology and to keep the population's morale high. The devices were extremely cheap to produce and sell, making them affordable for the general public. The use of the radio was actively promoted with slogans such as "All of Germany hears the Führer with the Volksempfänger." By 1941, nearly two-thirds of German households owned a Volksempfänger. To ensure that listeners primarily tuned in to the German state broadcasts, radios were technically limited. They could only receive medium wave and lacked the ability to receive shortwave stations, where foreign broadcasters such as the BBC transmitted. The tuning dial often only displayed the names of the local German stations. Listening to foreign stations was strictly prohibited and could lead to severe penalties, including fines, confiscation of the radio, or even the death penalty.
