A German WW2 dagger hanger (German: Dolchgehänge) is a functional and decorative accessory used by officers and high-ranking officials of various Third Reich military, paramilitary, and civil organizations to suspend their dress daggers from their uniform or belt. The primary purpose was to carry the private-purchase dress dagger (which was a status symbol, not a combat weapon). Hangers typically consisted of woven fabric straps (brocade or rayon) or leather straps, backed with colored felt or velvet, with metal fittings such as clips, buckles, and slides. Hangers varied significantly depending on the organization (Army, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, SS, SA, etc.) and often featured specific colors, designs, and insignia:
Army (Heer): Often featured silver or aluminum fittings with an oak leaf design. The straps might be grey/field-gray or pearl-colored woven material with dark green felt backing.
Luftwaffe: Typically had blue straps for the 2nd model dagger, sometimes described as "deluxe" with detailed oak leaf clips. Kriegsmarine (Navy): Characterized by black or blue straps with gilt (gold-plated) fittings, often featuring lion-head ornaments on the buckles. SS: Hangers were usually made of black leather or black brocade with silvered fittings, including a specific "chained" version for officers. Early war examples used higher quality materials like plated brass or solid nickel; as the war progressed, materials transitioned to zinc and aluminum alloys due to resource shortages. They used various mechanisms, including a top clip to attach to a tunic loop or D-ring and lower spring clips to secure the dagger's scabbard. Deluxe models had more ornate, push-up style clips. German dagger hangers are highly sought after by collectors today, as they are essential for a complete dagger set and exist in a vast array of types and variations.
