A Luftschutz helmet is a type of steel helmet used in Nazi Germany during World War II by the Reichsluftschutzbund (RLB), or National Air Raid Protection League. These helmets were issued to civilian air raid wardens, firefighters, rescue teams, and other home front personnel responsible for civil defense tasks during Allied air raids. The helmets were designed for civilian protection against shrapnel and falling debris, not direct combat. The most common type is the M38 "Gladiator" style helmet, which featured a distinct three-piece construction and a raised horizontal bead around the circumference. Other models, including reissued WWI-style helmets and captured foreign helmets (e.g., Czech VZ32), were also used. A single-piece M1944 model was also introduced later in the war. Appearance: They were typically painted a dark blue-grey color and featured a "Luftschutz" decal on the front, which often depicted a winged swastika emblem. The interior liner systems varied, often made of civilian-grade materials like cloth, vinyl, or simple leather pads, as opposed to the military-spec liners. These helmets served a vital role in protecting civilians tasked with extinguishing fires and rescuing survivors after bombings.
