M34 Tornister / Rucksack or "Affe"

A Tornister (German for "backpack" or "knapsack," sometimes known as an Affe by soldiers) was the standard issue military backpack used by the German Army from the late 19th century through both World War I and World War II. Early models, such as the M1895 and M1934, were characterized by a rigid internal wooden frame and a front flap covered in animal hide, typically calfskin, cowhide, or sometimes rabbit fur. Later war versions often simplified the design, using canvas instead of fur due to material shortages.
Purpose: The Tornister was designed to carry a soldier's personal kit and spare clothing, not combat equipment. Regulations specified contents like preserved vegetables, coffee cans, a hymn book, extra shoes, and tent parts. It was generally not carried into combat but remained with the supply train. When troops moved, they used the Tornister; special combat packs (like the A-frame or assault backpack) were used during actual fighting. Variations: Various models and versions existed throughout its service life, including the M1895, M1934, M41, and M42, with changes in materials, strap design (some attached to Y-straps), and internal pouches
