An Auer Neophan goggle is a type of protective goggle produced by the German company Auer, widely used by the German military (Wehrmacht, Kriegsmarine, Luftwaffe) during World War II. They were general-purpose goggles issued to various personnel, including: U-boat (submarine) crews: The most famous variation has red-tinted lenses, used for night adaptation. Crew members wore them before going up to the conning tower, allowing their eyes to adjust to the darkness more quickly once outside.
Motorcyclists: They protected against wind, dust, and debris. Glider pilots and aircrews: Different models were designed for aircrew use.
Afrikakorps soldiers: Sun goggles were used in desert climates. Panzer (tank) troops. The goggles are typically made with a rubberized frame and adjustable elastic straps. The "Neophan" lenses were available in various tints (red, grey, brown, or clear) and were specifically designed to increase contrast and provide protection in both poor and strong lighting conditions.
