A Schirmmütze is a German peaked or visor cap characterized by its distinct stiffened crown and forward-facing brim (the "Schirm" or visor). While the term simply means "peaked cap" in modern German, it is most frequently associated with military and paramilitary uniforms from the Imperial German era through World War II. Features an oval wool crown supported by a wire stiffener to create a "saddleback" shape, a semi-rigid band often in a contrasting color (like bottle-green), and a visor made of vulcanized rubber, fiber, or leather.
Enlisted/NCOs: Typically featured a black leather chinstrap. Officers: Adorned with braided silver or aluminum cords. Generals: Often used gold-colored cords and gilt insignia.

A very beautiful officers Gebirgsjäger Schirmmütze made by the company Peküro from Ludwigsburg. This one still has very beautiful and fresh colors and a lovely saddle shape. The eagle and the edelweiss are neatly mounted behind the silk lining and, in my opinion, have never been removed. This also applies to the pebbled buttons, the cockade, and the cord. The hand-woven cockade is, like the other insignia, in mint condition. The peak fits snugly on the cap in its original condition. There are some small moth holes, but these are not bothersome. The lining is in a very well-preserved, slightly weathered condition. The sweatband is still supple and pliable. It still neatly bears the manufacturer's label, the check which also bears the wearer's name, "Josef Altmann." A very neat visor cap!
