German troops in WW2 used specific felt and leather winter boots (Winterstiefel) and various improvisations to survive the Eastern Front's severe cold, as their standard leather marching boots offered little insulation. Felt & Leather Winter Boots (Winterstiefel): These were the primary official solution introduced after the initial winter on the Eastern Front proved the standard marching boots were inadequate. They were constructed from a combination of leather for the foot section and grey or brown felt (wool) for the upper shaft, with leather soles. These boots provided additional warmth and were popular among the troops, although they were typically issued in autumn and collected back in spring for repair and storage.
