The Eihandgranate 39 (English: "Egg Hand Grenade 39") was a German fragmentation hand grenade introduced in 1939 and used throughout World War II. It was developed as a lighter, more portable alternative to the iconic Stielhandgranate (stick grenade), which was often cumbersome for assault troops. It featured an oval, egg-shaped sheet-metal body consisting of two halves crimped together. To use it, a soldier unscrewed the domed cap at the top and sharply pulled the coiled wire hidden inside, which ignited a friction-type fuze. The color of the cap indicated the detonation delay: Blue: ~4.5 seconds (Standard delay). Yellow: ~7.5 seconds. Red: 1 second (Often used for booby traps). Gray: 10 seconds.Although less famous than the "potato masher" stick grenade, it was actually more common, with over 84 million units produced.
