The MG barrel carrier (also known as Laufschützer 34 or Laufschützer 42) was a cylindrical metal container used during World War II by the German Wehrmacht to transport and protect the quickly replaceable spare barrels for the MG 34 and MG 42 machine guns. Both the MG 34 and the MG 42 were known for their high rate of fire. According to military regulations, the barrel had to be replaced after about 150 rounds of continuous fire to prevent overheating. The barrel container allowed the MG team to safely and securely carry one or more spare barrels (there were also double containers). The hot barrel could safely cool down in the container after being replaced.
