A P38 hardshell holster is a sturdy, closed-back leather holster used by the German Wehrmacht during World War II to carry the Walther P.38 semi-automatic pistol. The holster is made of black or brown, thick, stiff leather ("hardshell") with a flap that closes with a belt and buckle. This construction offered better protection for the pistol in harsh field conditions than later softshell models. It was designed to be worn on the left side of the belt loop. It features an integrated spare magazine pouch on the side. Original holsters are often marked on the back with "P38". Hardshell holsters were produced from 1939 to 1943. After 1943 they were largely replaced by more cost-effective softshell holsters.
