*A German WWII signals Tornister is a specialized, often cowhide-covered, backpack (or frame-mounted pack) used by the Nachrichtentruppe (Signal Corps) to carry field telephones, radio components, cable reels, and tools. Known as the "Affe" (monkey) for its shape, these packs facilitated communication for infantry and field units, featuring specialized internal pockets. Specifically designed for communication personnel to transport delicate technical gear, rather than standard personal infantry equipment. They were often modified versions of the M34 "Affe" pack, frequently featuring hair-on cowhide for waterproofing, though later war models used canvas. They featured specialized compartments for wire, tools, and, in some cases, the Fernsprechtornister (field telephone pack) was used. Some signal backpacks were designed specifically to hold components of radio sets like the Torn. Fu. d2 (VHF transmitter/receiver). They existed in three main, specially-fitted, internally-divided versions to hold different types of equipment. They were used by the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS for frontline, or near-frontline, communications. The term Tornister can also refer to the "Tornister-Fu" (Torn. Fu.) series, which were the portable man-pack radios themselves rather than just the pack carrying them. *

Everything about this tornister is absolutely stunning! It's in fantastic, mint condition, as if it were manufactured yesterday, but it wasn't. All straps, buttons, hooks, and clasps are present. The straps are executed in a very beautiful chocolate color, and the leather is in excellent, supple and mint condition. It's nicely marked "fuq" 1943, which represents the company Curt Vogel, Lederwarenfabrik from Cottbus. A truly beautiful tornister!
