In the German Navy, Zündladung A (ignition charges) were primarily used as booster charges in the ignition chain of medium and heavy ammunition. A Zündladung serves as the link between the sensitive, but small, primary ignition (such as a primer or Zündschraube) and the main charge of a projectile. The Zündladung A provided a sufficiently powerful shock wave to detonate the relatively stable main charge (usually TNT or mixtures thereof) of shells. Application in grenades: They were placed in the so-called Zündladungskapsel (ignition charge case) of various types of naval artillery, ranging from 10.5 cm SK C/32 to the heaviest calibers such as the 30.5 cm SK L/50. They often consisted of compressed nitropenta (PETN) or tetryl, materials sensitive enough to be activated by a small fuse, yet powerful enough to initiate the main charge.
