*A German WW2 gascape with pouch (Gasplane mit Tasche) was a standard-issue protective set for soldiers to shield against chemical warfare agents, such as Mustard gas (Yperite), by covering their uniform and gear. The kit consisted of a rubberized, waterproof cape—often olive green or yellow—folded inside a pouch that was either rubberized (early war) or cloth/cotton (late war). Purpose was to prevent "Yperite" (mustard gas) from directly touching the soldier's skin or soaking into their uniform. Usually made of rubberized canvas or field-grey/tan fabric, roughly in size. They had two rear loops to attach to the gas mask strap, but were frequently secured directly to the gas mask canister (Tragbüchse) using leather or webbing straps. Gascape Details: A lightweight, waterproof sheet that, while intended to be worn, was often stored as part of the standard field gear. Included early rubberized types, tropical variations (often yellow/sand coloured), and late-war cotton versions, which were often marked with manufacturer codes (Maker codes). Though gas attacks were rare, the cape was designed for immediate protection. It is highly common in military collector circles to find the pouch empty or filled with replica capes. *

I don't like using the term "attic find" or "roof floor find," but this is definitely one of those! This set was recently discovered and has always belonged together. The previous owner didn't even dare remove the cape because it was so tightly packed. The two rust marks left on the cape are clearly visible from the gas cape bag. A very nice label with the maker's name and dated 1940. The snaps are PRYM brand and still work perfectly. A very beautiful set.
