*In the German Wehrmacht during WWII, a Divisional Commander's car pennant (known as Kommandozeichen einer Division) was a specific vehicle flag used to identify the commanding officer's staff car. The standard design for an Army (Heer) divisional commander consisted of a horizontal triangular pennant. Three horizontal stripes in the German national colors: black (top), white (middle), and red (bottom). Typically made of multi-piece cotton or linen. Often permanently encased in a clear celluloid cover trimmed with red or brown leather to protect it from the elements while the vehicle was in motion. The white center stripe sometimes displayed the division's specific number or monogram (e.g., the Großdeutschland division used its unique monogram). While the black-white-red tricolor was standard for most Army divisions, other branches and specialized units used different designs: Commanders of a Fliegerdivision used a pennant featuring a field-grey cloth background with a machine-embroidered Luftwaffe eagle. Division commanders in the navy used a tricolor (black-white-red) pennant but with a golden anchor embroidered in the center. Some elite divisions, such as the SS-Division Totenkopf, used unit-specific pennants, such as those featuring a skull (Totenkopf) symbol. Commanders within armored formations often used triangular pennants in their branch color (pink) with a black cross. The pennant was mounted on a metal flagstaff (fender pole) on the front of the vehicle, typically on the driver's side. These were strictly command flags, representing the commanding officer personally, and were not flown when the commander was not present in the vehicle. In January 1942, an order was issued to conceal or remove these flags in forward areas to prevent Allied intelligence from identifying troop movements and high-ranking targets. *
