*A Kriegsmarine officers' car pennant (Service pennant) was a small, triangular flag placed on the left front fender of vehicles during World War II to indicate the presence of a naval officer. The pennant had a dark blue background with a golden eagle holding a swastika in the middle. The standard dimension was about 31 x 21 cm. They were often made of ribbed cotton or rayon, sometimes with a waterproof celluloid cover for protection from the elements. The pennant was attached to a chrome-plated mast on the car with metal clips or cords.
The design varied subtly depending on the officer's rank in the vehicle:Had a golden yellow edge (piping) along the edges of the blue pennant. Beginning in 1941, the simple yellow border was replaced by a wider gold band decorated with small embroidered swastikas. Specific commanders (such as from a battalion or regiment) sometimes used variants with additional symbols such as a gold-colored anchor. These pennants were strictly intended for official use. According to the regulations, the pennant had to be removed or covered when the officer in question was not in the vehicle. For collectors, these items are relatively rare today, as the Kriegsmarine was the smallest branch of the German Wehrmacht and car use was limited at the time. *
