€ 1.495,00
A magnificent, museum-grade original French military flag finial (Cime / Vlaggentop) featuring the iconic Gallic Rooster (Le Coq Gaulois). Dating to the July Monarchy (1830–1848) under King Louis-Philippe, this exceptional piece was designed to crown the flagpole of a military or National Guard regiment (Garde Nationale). Crafted with exquisite precision, the rooster shows a completely seamless, high-end casting with its original fire-gilding (or moulu) fully intact and uncleaned. The finial is mounted on an old, authentic round wooden display base. Intrigued by its assembly, a past collector securely fastened the finial to the wooden stand using a genuine 1917 French 10-Centime coin with a central hole (the iconic WWI Lindauer wartime currency) as a structural washer. This item originates from an elite private German estate collection and was almost certainly brought to Germany as highly prized war booty (Erbeutetes Armeestück) following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 or World War I. This spectacular piece would serve as an absolute centerpiece for any high-end French Empire or 19th-century military collection. Historical Context & Battle Lore. Following the July Revolution of 1830, King Louis-Philippe abolished the Bourbon fleur-de-lis and restored the tricolor flag. On March 27, 1831, he officially decreed that all French military and National Guard flags were to be topped with the Gallic Rooster. This brief manufacturing window lasted only until the revolution of 1848 when the symbol was changed again. Flags bearing this exact style of finial led French troops into major expansionist campaigns and European actions, including: The Siege of Antwerp (1832): Where French forces fought alongside the newly independent Belgium to expel Dutch troops from the Antwerp citadel.
The Conquest of Algeria (1830s–1840s): Where regiments fought heavy combat actions under the Duke of Aumale.
Symbolism of the Crowing Rooster
The posture of this specific rooster carries deep patriotic and martial meaning:
The Open Beak: The wide-open beak depicts the rooster mid-crow (Cocorico), symbolizing the Zeitenwende—the awakening of a new dawn of French liberty and defiance against tyranny. The Right Foot on the Globe: The paw rests on a terrestrial sphere explicitly stamped "FRANCE", representing the global reach and influence of the French Nation.
The Left Foot on the Sword: Positioned atop a horizontal Roman-style short sword (glaive), this stance directly translates to a warning: France stands for peace and liberty, but is ready to crush its enemies underfoot if provoked. Display & Collector's Note This finial stems from the exact same prestigious German estate collection as the 1833 French 3rd Cuirassiers armor set currently listed on our website. The fact that these items were preserved together for decades underpins their historic provenance and suggests they were brought back together from the same historical campaign.
This Item
Gilding & Detail: The rooster is in stellar, untouched condition. The casting is masterfully executed without visible seam lines (gietnaden), allowing the microscopic textures of the feathers, comb, and scales on the legs to stand out vividly under the thick, original gold gilding. Dimensions: The finial measures 27 cm in total height (including the wooden base) with an impressive wing-to-wing span of 15 cm. Mounting & Base: The underside assembly features a captivating 1917 French 10-centime coin serving as the screw washer to lock the socket to the old wooden plinth. Wartime Label: Affixed to the bottom of the wooden base is a highly important, aged paper collection label written in antique fountain pen ink. While partially faded, the historical description reads: "Coq o puloi? ensigne qui surmt fr..... monarchie..." followed by an authentic period signature.
