We are profoundly privileged to offer an artifact of unparalleled historical grandeur and Vatican elite status: an original, mid-19th-century Papal States Civil & Diplomatic Court Dress Tailcoat (Abito di Corte dello Stato Pontificio). Dating precisely to the golden era of pre-unification Rome (circa 1840-1860), this magnificent garment was tailored for a high-ranking member of the Papal Court, such as an Apostolic Nuncio (Nunzio Apostolico) or a Noble Privy Chamberlain (Cameriere Segreto di Spada e Cappa de Sua Santità).Crafted from heavy, high-grade jet-black broadcloth wool, the coat features an exceptionally imposing cut with a high standing collar and heavily stylized gauntlet cuffs. The reverse tails are a display of sheer opulence, featuring beautifully scalloped faux pocket flaps with elaborate gold wire accents and a majestic, large hand-embroidered gold bullion laurel wreath emblem centered perfectly above the tail split. The jacket retains its absolute full complement of 18 original, highly dome-shaped (convex) gilded brass uniform buttons. Each button beautifully displays the high-relief coat of arms of the Holy See (the Triregnum Papal Tiara and crossed Keys of St. Peter), backed by the elite Parisian maker hallmark "F.B. SUPERIEUR FRANCE". The interior of this museum piece is fully lined with its original, ultra-luxurious pure black silk. In the neck area, it houses the period-attached linen tag, masterfully hand-embroidered with red silk thread showing the owner's personal court monogram: "R.C.".Condition Report: Miraculously, this entire mid-19th-century woolen masterpiece is completely 100% moth-free, an extraordinary feat of preservation for a textile of this age. For absolute transparency, the premium pure black silk lining has naturally aged and is somewhat loose along the right-side seams, the left sleeve attachment lining is loose (though structurally firmly in place), and parts of the collar lining stitching have relaxed over time. These minor, honest period fatigue points are purely confined to the internal stitching and do not diminish the incredible, breathtaking external display value of this papal treasure.
