WWI French Army Pioneer Barbed Wire Cutter - Peugeot Frères (Large Model)
An original WWI French Army heavy-duty pioneer barbed wire cutter (Pince coupe-barbelés), manufactured by the renowned firm Peugeot Frères. This is the highly desirable large model (grand modèle), measuring approximately 50 cm in total length.
The metal shaft bears a clear, deeply stamped manufacturer's mark reading "PEUGEOT FRÈRES / BREVETÉ" along with remnants of the iconic walking lion trade logo. The tool is in a very honest, uncleaned combat-used condition, completely free from destructive heavy rust or pitting. The original wooden handles remain in beautiful, solid shape with a tight fit and deep natural patina. One of the cutting jaws shows light period wear from active trench use, but the entire mechanical compound hinge assembly remains fully functional and operates smoothly.
Note on provenance: This specific piece was recently recovered in Germany, indicating it was highly likely captured and re-issued as battlefield booty (Beutewerkzeug) by German pioneer troops during or shortly after the Great War. A textbook, robust piece of history.
