Wartime Wehrmacht / Waffen-SS M44 Artillery Rucksack - Heavy Leather Straps

This is an authentic, historically rich World War II German combat field rucksack, commonly designated as the M40/M44 Artillery pattern. Introduced as a lightweight, streamlined alternative to the traditional fur-covered Tornister, this small combat pack became a standard load-bearing item for artillery crews, specialized units, and frontline infantry during the mid-to-late war years. Constructed from durable, heavy olive-drab cotton canvas, the pack features an internal divider, its original drawstring cord, and a single main top closure flap.
A premier feature of this particular specimen is its exceptionally heavy, full-leather integrated shoulder strap assembly. While later production variants utilized simplified canvas webbing, this hard-to-find pattern retains its robust, wide black leather straps secured to a reinforced leather backing patch on the reverse. Interestingly, the manufacturer stamping on the central leather tab shows contemporary period defacing or scraping. This intentional obliteration of the markings is a classic wartime or immediate post-war occurrence, typically executed to erase Reich procurement codes, Waffen-SS contract markings, or political stamps for civilian reuse or denazification in 1945. Remaining structurally sound with pliable leather and fully functional steel adjustment buckles, this rucksack displays marvelous field character and serves as a fantastic addition to a combat gear display.
