*The Bajonet 98 (officially Seitengewehr 98, or S98) was the primary service bayonet for the German Army during World War I, designed for the Gewehr 98 rifle. It was produced in several variations throughout the war.
Key characteristics and models of the S98 bayonet include:
Design: The original S98 featured a long, slender, sword-like blade, often called a "quillback" or "pipeback" due to its round spine. Mauser avoided a muzzle ring to prevent interference with barrel accuracy. Models:
S98 a.A. (alte Art): The initial "old type" model had a one-piece wooden grip.
S98 n.A. (neue Art): The "new type", introduced around the turn of the century, had a stronger two-piece wooden grip.
S98/02: A shorter and sturdier bayonet (44 cm blade) for pioneers and engineers.
S98/05: This model, introduced in late 1905 and known to the Allies as the "butcher blade" due to its distinctive shape and substantial 37 cm (15 in) blade, became standard later in the war.
S84/98: A shorter, handier knife bayonet (25 cm blade) reintroduced toward the end of the war as an economy measure and better suited for the close quarters of trench warfare, a model that later became standard in the Weimar Republic and WWII.*
