A Winterhilfswerk plaque (or Türplakette) with the text "Wir haben geholfen" (We have helped) from 1933-34 is a commemorative item that was issued to German households that had made a donation to the Winterhilfswerk des Deutschen Volkes (WHW). It served as proof of donation. Households placed the plaque on their front door or window to show that they had done their "duty." This also helped to prevent further visits from collectors. Although some collectors look for "enamel," most original 1933-34 plaques were made of stamped aluminum or thin sheet metal. They usually have a diameter of about 9.5 cm. Historical Context: The WHW was founded by the National Socialists in 1933 as an annual fundraising campaign for the underprivileged during the winter months. It was a powerful propaganda tool to demonstrate national solidarity.
This item:
Rare winter relief plaque. To be clear: this is not the 9.5 cm stamped aluminium version, but the 15 cm enamel version, which is considerably rarer in every respect; I suspect these variants hung next to the doors of restaurants, businesses, and shops. There are a few small chips, but in my opinion, it is still in very nice, collectible condition. Low shipping cost!
